Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
This term is packed with exciting learning experiences for our students. We have just completed two days of exciting science education with science educator, Jacob Willard. (The ‘Wiz’). The Wiz had the students absolutely fascinated with his exciting demonstrations of chemical reactions and physics experiments. The students were able to gain a strong theoretical understanding of science concepts while being thoroughly engaged by things exploding, catching fire, flying into the air and freezing. These are the kind of experiences that can inspire some students to follow pathways that they had not previously considered and motivate all students to be more engaged in their learning.
The Hands on Learning program developed in conjunction with 54 Reasons had a very successful launch last week. The philosophy behind HoL is also about engaging students and connecting them with others. Students are building personal projects, projects for the school and learning about the values and culture essential to working together to achieve successful outcomes.
We intend to develop our Automotive, Construction and Metals programs through this year with the intention of offering Vocational Education (VET) certificates to senior students in 2025. We will also continue to develop the vital HoL programs supporting the learning and engagement of younger students.
Our teachers are working hard to develop their practice in explicit instruction. Evidence is clear that student learning is maximised when evidence based explicit instruction is utilised across the school. This evidence based approach is being implemented in core classes, secondary electives and primary specialist lessons.
Our students continue to engage in learning activities such as the Merino Wether Challenge, Write a Book in a Day and School Triathlons – a wonderful selection of activities designed to give students a broad range of options to extend their learning.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our students and our school.
Kind Regards
Mike

THE AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC FESTIVAL
The Australian Antarctic Festival is being held in Hobart from the 22nd – 25th of August 2024. It is the only event of its kind in Australia, the Australian Antarctic Festival celebrates the role of Hobart as one of the world’s pre-eminent gateways to the Antarctic and acknowledges the contribution made by the Antarctic community to both the economy and the social fabric of Tasmania.
This year Campbell Town District High School was one of the 200 schools sent 50 cut-out Adélie penguins to paint and return to the festival. Students were each given a penguin to decorate, and these were sent back and will become part of the many penguin rookeries around Hobart. Students and their families are encouraged to head along and see the results of the extraordinary colour and creativity of the ‘Penguin Rookeries’ displays.

Food and Fibre concentrates on all things FIBRE like wool, cotton, plants, soil, seeds and animals, how we need these things, how they are grown, managed, produced and utilised. Where FOOD comes from, how it is prepared, stored and digested. Students are investigating how a farm functions, how factories produce and distribute goods and what services are required all around Agriculture.
Ask your kids to tell you how a Deciduous tree is different to a Gumtree and what a Phalange is!
During Food and Fibre lessons in Term 2 and Term 3, all students, Prep to Grade 6, learn something important about our sheep and how we can keep them healthy.
As part of the Merino Whether Challenge we take part in exploring everything to do with sheep and their surroundings. In June we learned how to judge/score fleece and during July we investigated what sheep eat and how it is digested.
Did you know that sheep have 4 stomachs?
Did you know they re-chew their food halfway through digesting it?
We also spend time in the garden, weeding and tidying, which has been resting a little during these winter months. But soon, we will be planting new and exciting things.

This is the last term the wethers will be on site at Campbell Town as we prepare for the show day in September. The wethers have finally started to put some weight on and their wool is growing. They are definitely getting quieter with them coming for feed, a sign of the quiet, calm handling students have been exhibiting when the sheep are handled. Before the term break 11/12 VET Agriculture students trimmed the wethers feet. Students from Grade 5/6 have been leading them around the school, getting them used to new situations and noise. They have visited several classrooms including Kinder. A few calling cards have been left. A big thank you to Mr David Taylor who bought the scales and weighed, and condition scored the sheep last term. It certainly put my mind to ease over the stage the sheep were at before going into the holidays. The months ahead will see students starting to clean the wethers up and do some preparation to have them looking smart on the day.

TASMANIAN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION EXPO
Last week 7 students from Grades 9 to 11 travelled to Hobart to attend the first ever Tasmanian Building and Construction Expo hosted by Civil Contractors Federation of Tasmania. There were about 40 exhibitors with a diverse range of careers and jobs involved. In one corner students were laying bricks under instruction. Another corner housed an excavator simulator. A housing group had VR headsets which took wearers through a construction site. There were surveyors, civil construction companies, bridge builders, plumbers, road safety & sign businesses, road line marking, Hydro, CAT, Taswater and many other businesses. My students liked the following: “People explained the careers. There was no rush, they gave you time”, and “People asked you questions and spoke to you”. Most displays were from the back of a work ute and there was no barrier between the students and the presenters. It was a great day out and many of us come home learning about new areas of employment.

At the end of last term Grade 11/12 students ran a car wash as part of their learning in Pathways to Work. A lot of brainstorming occurred as part of our planning as there was more to organise than initially thought. Over 2 consecutive Fridays, 7 vehicles were washed. The team need to thank the following people: those who kindly let us wash their car and paid for the privilege, Scott for the loan of the pressure washer, Mr Reed who assisted on the last Friday with shining wheels and his very helpful students whose assistance allowed us to wash more cars than planned. Students learned that there was more to running a simple business than meets the eye, with checklists required. We experienced a couple of unique problems – frozen hoses and very icy cement. Washing cars in winter in Campbell Town is so much fun.

STUDENT WELLBEING AND ENGAGEMENT SURVEY
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 4 - 12
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 4 - 12 at Campbell Town District High School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: 2 September to 6 September 2024
Who: Years 4 to 12
What do I need to do: You and your child do not need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4 to 12 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Laurindah Taylor-Hambleton via the school office.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
