Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
We are in the final week of Term 2 and I would like to wish all of our families and staff a safe and enjoyable holiday break. I would like to thank all parents who attended our recent parent teacher interviews. If you were not able to attend but would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s learning, please contact the office who will arrange for you to speak to a staff member.
We are very proud of the development of literacy learning in our school. Our staff are implementing evidence-based practices consistently across the school in both reading and writing. All of our students now receive systematic phonics instruction in reading. Writing is taught to students in a manner that is scaffolded to guide them through a clear process for recording their thoughts, ideas and responses in a variety of text types.
We have implemented a literacy intervention program called MacqLit for students from Year 3 to 10 to support students to fill gaps that may have developed prior to the changes in reading instruction. This program has achieved significant success, students have made excellent progress in reading, confidence has improved significantly as has student attendance. I would particularly like to congratulate our MacqLit team of Teacher Assistants, Education Support Specialist and Teaching Staff for their dedication to student learning. Their achievements are being celebrated in a student/staff morning tea this week. We will be introducing Multilit Sage as a reading intervention for P to 2 students who require additional support next term.
Our senior students are involved in a rich array of transitional activities as part of our Inspiring Positive Futures Program. In addition to programs and visits supporting choices about future study and employment, students are supported by a range of experiences in health and driver education. These are vital to safety and wellbeing as students progress through increasing opportunities for independence and self-direction.
Our Student Leaders continue to be involved in a range or activities supporting facilities at the school and we have also undertaken to support learning for students in the Solomon Islands through connections established by Miss Knowles.
An icon of Campbell Town culture is the sheep walk through the corridors led by Ms Bennett and her team of students in the Wether Challenge. I rounded a corner yesterday to be greeted by a group of meandering merinos and their very capable student handlers. We are amused and proud by this kind of expression of culture reflecting our local community.
Wishing all a fantastic holiday break.
Kind Regards
Mike
This term in Kindergarten, we have been busy strengthening our values of Connection and Respect. We are learning to look after ourselves, our special Kinder space and each other. We are working hard together to create a safe and positive environment with lots of collaborative learning such as:
- building intricate cities out of blocks and loose parts
- all of us contributing to painting our reused cardboard box cubby house into a colourful masterpiece
- cooking together to make ANZAC biscuits just like Hush and Grandma Poss eat in Possum Magic
- a busy construction site using brown sugar, oats and coconut for a sensory experience

In Science, Grade 3/4 Webber have been learning about states of matter. We have been investigating the result of adding or removing heat from different liquids. Last week we made ice cream in a bag using milk, sugar, vanilla, ice and salt. We were very excited when our experiment was a success and the end result was delicious!

3/4 AND 5/6 CAMPBELL TOWN SHOW PREPARATION
Earlier in the term, primary students were fortunate enough to have Mayor Mary Knowles come and teach students various traditions in preparation for the Campbell Town Show.
In Grade 5-6, Mayor Knowles taught students the fundamentals of knitting. Each student knitted their own piece, which eventually Mrs Taylor-Hambleton knitted together, and was entered as our class show piece. For many students it took great patience and perseverance as the delicate skill was practiced and refined.
In Grade 3-4, Mayor Knowles helped us make some wet felting pieces for the show. Students used the traditional method of wet felting with a combination of raw fleece and coloured wool to create some amazing artworks!
We would like to sincerely thank Mayor Knowles for taking the time to come and teach us all of our new skills so they can continue to live on!

3/4 Teacher and 5/6 Teacher
On Friday 21st June, some Grade 5/6 students participated in Netball Tasmania’s Northern Netball Championships at the Silverdome. We entered two teams into the tournament, with a range of student abilities and experiences. Each team, coached by Mrs Unsworth and Miss Lester, played six matches throughout the day against other schools across Northern Tasmania. Mrs Unsworth’s team narrowly missed the finals by 1 point.
All students demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day. It was fantastic to see several players step up and assist their teammates that had limited netball experience.
