Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
We have enjoyed a very successful start to the beginning of Term 2. I would like to thank parents and carers for their support in getting students to school regularly. We have seen a significant growth in attendance this year in comparison to last and those improved rates of attendance have continued into this term.
We have the school cross country this week, we invite parents to attend to support their children. As always we encourage students to participate to the best of their ability, emphasising the DECYP values. The encouragement of staff and family members is important in building confidence and supporting participation. Primary and secondary sport also commences this week. Our students are excited to be representing Campbell Town in a range of sports on Wednesday for secondary students and Friday for primary.
We have placed importance on developing entries for the Campbell Town Show at the end of the month. The theme this year is tradition and our students will be entering in categories ranging from art to writing and cooking. We will, of course be represented by students in the wool handling competition. Jill Bennett has commenced work to get our teams prepared. We are also participating in the National Merino Wether Challenge. We are hosting the wether’s onsite and students will work on the care handling and presentation associated with the stock.
Our student leaders are highly proactive within the school. They have organised events and fundraisers including ‘Do it for Dolly Day’ to raise awareness about bullying and the ‘Big Freeze’ Challenge for MND. The leaders are also running a weekly attendance competition with prizes for the home group with best attendance.
We will be hosting parent teacher meetings in the second half of this term and mid-year reports will be issued for students. Of course, parents are very welcome to contact us at any time to discuss their children’s learning or wellbeing.
Kind Regards
Mike

Pre-Kinder
Pre-Kinder has started up again for Term 2 and we invite anyone who has a child born in 2020 to come along to play, make friends, get to know the Kindergarten space and to learn some simple routines. Our teacher is Halana Knowles who is also our Primary AST and our Pre-Kinder assistant is Allison Bailey. Together they are dedicated to making your child’s year of Pre-Kinder a special one. Pre-Kinder is on each Monday at 9:00-10:00am in the Kinder building.
Launching into Learning
Our LiL Playgroup has also started up for Term 2 and we have seen some lovely numbers attending. Playgroup is open for any child from 0-5 years of age and is a wonderful way for them to play, make friends, create, read, and sing in a warm and safe environment. Our LiL teacher is Halana Knowles and our assistant is Grace Pratley and they are extremely excited to work together with families to support your children and build a sense of connection. Playgroup is on each Wednesday at 9:00-10:00am in the Kinder building.
Our first week back to school brings lots of excitement on the agricultural front. The chickens hatched by Years 11/12 in Term 1 are back. Four (hopefully) hens are located in the school garden and will be the responsibility of primary and the secondary sectors. Eight (hopefully) hens are located near the school Ag shed and will be looked after by the 11/12 Vet Ag class. We look forward to watching them grow and the arrival of the first eggs (won't be for a while).
Week 1, Term 2 also brought the arrival of six merino wethers for the Schools Wether Challenge. These freshly shorn youngsters will be at school for the next six months. They will learn how to lead, put on lots of condition and be the source of learning for many of our students. We will give them a week or so to settle, before starting to get them used to being handled and teaching them to lead. In September they will be judged on their wool and meat. Every month students will have questions to answer as part of the competition. Our first question is about sheep teeth. Anyone who would like to contribute an answer, please do not hesitate to send them in or drop at the office.
A very big thank you to Madeleine Scott and the Scott family for supporting us with this competition. Madeleine oversaw the shearing of the boys and personally delivered them last week. She also dropped off two bales of hay to assist them to adjust to their new diet.
We would love donations of grain (preferably oats or barely) to help fatten our boys up and help them grow. Please just drop at the office or contact myself for pick up. We are grateful for any help we get from our community.

11/12 PATHWAYS TO WORK AGFEST EXCURSION
On the 3rd of May students from the 11/12 Pathways to Work class visted Agfest to learn about employment opportunities and different skills required for different jobs. Sad farewells were said, as we left Jodie to man the fort at school, and we went off for a day of fun and learning.
The Thursday before attending Agfest, students had studied the map of the site and selected places they would like to visit. They were asked to pose at least two questions for site holders. The map was marked with the places to visit and a scavenger hunt was written for students to answer.
Shane got to drive a submersible drone at the UTAS shed, manoeuvring the device across the sea floor in the pool. Jill had a go at the welding interactive which assists students to learn how to place a good weld. We looked at insects under the microscope and it was hard to leave the UTAS display. Students watched Yolla DHS compete in the dairy section of junior handlers, leading Guernsey Heifers. Whilst the dog we observed in the sheep dog trials tried her best, the sheep just didn’t want to play the game, with a frustrating withdrawal when a sheep jumped the fence.
From here we looked at the rugs from Waverly Woollen Mills, Australian made hats at Mojo Hats and entered the competition to win a free Rural Youth membership. Amanda, from Rural Youth, told us many of the benefits of membership of this amazing organisation for young people and the organisers of Agfest. After learning about becoming a volunteer ambulance person, and what Jill has to do with electronic tags for sheep, we stopped for lunch in a quiet area.
After lunch we hit the big toys. Ty’s questions lead to us finding out that Toyota vehicles are made in many countries, not just Japan, and sitting on the back of the Tundra hybrid ute, Toyotas most expensive exhibit. We are still trying to revive Kellie after being told the price. Shane still believes the best tractors are green, and we learnt that the big ones would be used in potato paddocks. We also looked at other coloured tractors and excavators.
Just for Ella, we ducked into a craft shed, before heading home, where she found some beautiful gems and found Mrs Barber with her yummy honey. Our students behaviour was great. They interacted with many people and showed how polite and respectful students from Campbell Town can be.
